How to Boost Your Chances of a Healthy Pregnancy

by Leigh Cabañes

While many women seem to get pregnant just thinking about it, there are also those who cannot conceive despite deliberate, even calculated efforts. What a lot of people don’t realize is that, as with most everything else in life, to succeed, preparation is key.

Especially with today’s modern lifestyle fraught with stressors that affect all aspects of life including female fertility, it doesn’t hurt to try and minimize such inimical factors. Yoga is one of the best proven stress relievers available and there are studies that further extend the benefits of the practice to actual physical perks such as increased blood flow to the pelvis and improved hormone production – effects that are conducive to conception.

Some postures are, of course, better than others to achieve the desired results. The Salamba Sirsasana (Headstand) in particular, is not regarded the “King” of all yoga asanas for nothing. This inverted pose has been documented to improve, if not cure, anything from anxiety and migraines to thyroid and sexual dysfunctions, even vision and skin complexion.

A few minutes in this posture each day will help prepare the body for pregnancy with fertility boosted further by pelvic-centric moves such as Setu Bandha Sarvangasana (Bridge Pose), Utthita Ashwa Sanchalanasana (High Lunge), Baddha Konasana (Butterfly) and Malasana (Yogini Squat). Just these few poses alone could greatly enhance one’s overall health and are easy enough to do on your own, with the exception of Sirsasana, which should only be attempted by an inexperienced student in a studio setting with the guidance of a qualified yoga instructor.

Indeed, it’s never too early for any woman to make some minor but impactful lifestyle changes particularly if child-bearing is in the offing. Coupled with a sensible diet and the prescribed prenatal supplements, Folic Acid, DHA and Omega 3 amongst others, a healthy pregnancy may be just around the corner.
