The first time I chanted “om” in a yoga class, I felt really conscious, awkward and hesitant. Gradually I grew familiar with it and now I even enjoy chanting it. It gives me a sense of grounding and calmness but I didn’t really understand why until much later. This seemingly simple sound actually comprises of 4 syllables: 1) A as in “ahhh”, 2) U as in “ooo”, 3) M as in “mmm”, 4) silence. Apparently, the sound “om” when chanted vibrates at the same vibrational frequency found throughout everything in nature. In other words, it can be described as the basic sound of the universe. By chanting it, we are affirming our connection to all living beings, nature and the universe. When chanted correctly, this powerful mantra has the ability to calm the mind and slow down the nervous system.
